ARE YOU JOINING THE STAMPEDE THIS BLACK FRIDAY?

Fri Nov 18, 2011 9:48 PM EST
business, holiday, debt, christmas, budgets, credit-cards, bank-loans, black-friday

One week from now, on BLACK FRIDAY EVENING, we are all expected to behave the same way we always have.  We are being treated as if we can do nothing different this year, that we will descend on the 'junk' stores like hungry cattle descend on freshly dropped hay.

In anticipation of the annual 'round up and branding' of the herd, stores offer big discounts to attempt to lure you into 'stampeding'.  Many stores this time are even opening earlier than ever before and are compelling their 'ranch hands' to cut short their day of Thanksgiving, their day to share with family or friends, or even their day at the local pub with friends, over indulging in food and beverage. One day.  The public is hearing those famous words...'this is to help our customers, to help you, but is it?  Or is it for profits, for stockholders, for corporations, for big business?

Now, we all know that plenty of places stay open all or a part of Thanksgiving Day.   Gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants and others.  Cabbies drive, and many truckers eat their Thanksgiving meal at their favorite truck stop, but that is not what we are talking about here.

Here, we are discussing millions- perhaps billions of dollars.  We are talking about profits for stockholders.  We are talking about big BONUSES for CEO'S, for district and local managers.  In addition, we are talking about more than that.

Earlier this year, on Oct. 01, 2011, I wrote an article, titled WHICH MADE IN CHINA OR VIETNAM OR IMPORTED ITEM ARE YOU GOING TO BUY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, when it was noticed that probably 98% of items in the discount store had 'MADE IN CHINA'  stickers somewhere on the item.

  Now, the question is:

WILL YOU HIRE YOUR LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR?

Will you support a local business?  Will you help your son-in-law, nephew, friend, neighbor, or brother or sister stay employed? Will you help support your town or city, your county and state?  Or will you buy a trinket?  A candle holder, a cute lamp, an artificial wreath, or even a vacuum cleaner or computer, that has NOT been made in America? Are you able to 'think outside the box'? Are you able to spend differently this year, or will you be part of the cattle in a cattle drive held every year?

Here are a few ideas for gift giving that would be totally appreciated this year, and would help support your area and those that desperately could use the work.

  1.    Find your local masseuse and  purchase a deep massage for a tired body!

  2.    Give a gift certificate for an area spa.

  3.    Buy an oil change and service from a local garage as a gift.

  4.    Look for your LOCAL candlemaker.

  5.    Buy a fruit tree, or give a gift certificate from a nursery.

  6.    Take someone out to a nice dinner.

  7.    Purchase a meal at a local grocery, and have it delivered.

  8.    Buy 10 spices, and wrap up in a gift basket.

  9.    Offer your services for a day, if you are a skilled plumber, carpenter, book-keeper.

  10.  Give home-made, hand made gifts.

  11.  Purchase a gift certificate for an auto detail.

  12.  Be a 'slave' for a day.

  13. Buy books from local bookstores.

  14. Buy paintings from local artists.

  15. Send pure Maple Syrup.

I think that this year, more than any other, it is important to hire local, buy local, which may even mean buying Wisconsin Cheese, or Pure Maple Syrup from Vermont, or seeking out local artists or authors, and supporting them.

There is a push this year to make Saturday the 27th a local business centered "black Friday" where you only shop at small local businesses. It sounds like a pretty good idea. A bunch of local shops and stores around Richmond are running specials on Saturday to bring more people in. I plan on doing a little shopping that day just to support local businesses. I still swear to never touch foot in any store on black Friday or Thanksgiving. I think people who show up at a Wal-Mart or Toys-R-Us on Thanksgiving should be ashamed of themselves. They need a deal so bad that they force others to work on a Holiday just so they can get a TV for $350. It's just more proof that altruism is dead in America. Screw you, deals for me.

Boy, JEFINVA, I sure agree! I will go out and support a local "Saturday Smile', even if I can spend little. Anything will help, even coffee at your cafe that is there and open. Show up is probably good. Thanks, G

Hi, Jim- welcome! Did you see Enoch's post about being combat veterans...

As combat veterans, both of us have seen enough violence in our lives.

LOL, Enoch, you always add humor, too!...

But you are right, Jim- way too many crazy drivers!

I will not do the black Friday thing... but then I never have.

Thanks for the great list, buying local is good for everybody.

Over the years I have found the green folding stuff works well too.

Yes, the green folding stuff would probably be appreciated more this tie than ever! We have never done the Black Friday thing, either. Back when we were buying Christmas presents, we would buy them on/about Dec. 27th, through Jan. 15th or so. We found that everyone was fresh on our minds, we had just been to their house and thought... 'Darn, they could have used, ..they would have liked..', so we started applying that and used After Christmas Bargains. Before the end of January, I would have all my shopping done for the next year!

But for our house, we decided that this whole thing was getting- or is- way too commercial, and we told all family members that we won't be doing it anymore. We now spend more time at each others homes, have more meals together, and get a little token gift for the younger children.

I think I'll go to the beach and see if the winter swells have started doing their thing. Black Friday at Kua Bay two years ago was quite the show.

I don't shop much period unless someone brings out the cattle prod. I do a bit of shopping online for my grandchildren but this usually means books or a DVD I think they'll like. Consumerism is way overrated and truly not my thing.

No stampeeeedes for me. I hate crowds in the worst way. Even in the bathroom there is always someone in the mirror. Why can't he just leave me alone?

Besides, Christ did not tell us to go to the mall and buy stuff.

And grump, sometimes is is hard to be alone, isn't it? I hate crowds, too. I nearly bolted from a cruise once, due to the line.. if I had got there a little late, once boarding had started, I may not have noticed. But ALL those people- had to talk to myself for a minute there...

And yes, Christ did not say 'shop till you drop..' !!

I, too, have never done Black Friday. I detest shopping at the big stores. I avoid Walmart. Employee owned or small business is for me.

I shop through out the year finding the gifts I want to give. My family is use to me finding a gift or two in January or February that I had hidden and forgotten about. This has created a tradition.

I can't stand the big stores anymore, either. Every once in a while, I find I have to go into WalMart, and it really aggravates me. We reach out to family/friends during the year, and if a friend of ours NEEDS a present, not sure about if it is a real friendship..

I am a spontaneous gift giver and it is so much more fun for me. Pressure gift giving seems useless and not in the spirit as spontaneous giving. Most of the gifts I give are from local businesses. Living in Kailua Kona Hawaii, coffee, mac nuts and local goods are appreciated by those on the Mainland so this makes life quite easy for me.

Oh, js. Please, no. Don't tell me you are one of those people who drop by with some f'ing gift every time I see you.

"Oh, grump. I was in the second hand store and saw this flour sifter and since you bake I got it for you." (I already have 3.)

"Oh, grump. I saw this brand of coffee when I was in a shop in Denver and I thought I would get it for you. I know you like it." (She served it at her house once and I made the mistake of saying it was good. I hate the stuff, it tastes like dirty water.)

"Oh, grump. I know you like cheese and look what I got you."

I get so tired of people trying to make me feel indebted to them with things, things, things. Just treat me well. That is enough.

I suppose I could get in the car, drive all over town, and pick up s**t loads of things to have ready for the "Oh I saw this and thought of you" indebtedness creators so I could give them some piece of junk so I wouldn't feel all materially indebted. So, what the f**k are they trying to accomplish, any way by getting me "in debt"?

Gee, that felt good. I had a nice little rant and lived up to my name.

HaHaHa... did that feel good, grump in NM? Love it. We've had a few of those 'debt-dealers' in our day, and it sure isn't fun, is it??? LOL. Hope you can sleep well tonight, now that it is off your chest?? Do you live in the mountains of NM, or in the lowlands? My husband said you could call yourself- Forest Grump!! Thanks, Gloria. Oh, crap. Here comes some more...........

And furthermore, those folks (usually women) who bring all this stuff, debt-dealers as you call them, start texting on the cel phone. I don't text, ever. It is kid stuff, I think. You get a text that says: "Here at the car wash and thinking of you." What does that mean, I wonder? What about the f'ing car wash reminded them of me? Dirty water running down a drain, maybe? So, for the first, and hopefully last, time I text back: "Don't text me again, thanks."

Now when I give out my cel number I just tell people not to text me, ever. Call me and we will make arrangements to meet at the coffee shop and talk and don't bring me any cheese or pens from the band or extra napkins from McDonalds or anything. If I want some cheese, I will go get my own f'ing cheese and thanks for no cheese.

Fieuf. *wiping sweat from brow*

I live in Albuquerque and can see the Sandia and Manzano Mts. from my house. Mountains to the east and high desert and dormant volcanos to the west. Rio Grande in between.

Not my style, Grump. My friend has a friend that pushes stuff on us constantly. It is so annoying. One night my friend came home with tons of food all for him and we could hardly jam it into our refrigerator and freezer. Then just this last week she shows up with a 25 pound turkey. It was free so she snagged the biggest one or it seems. It wouldn't fit in her freezer so she gave it to us. Two people and a 25 pound turkey? Not thinking clearly! The cat colony is having a feast on Thursday, oh wait, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday or whenever the darn bird has thawed. Here's the rub, he's going to her house for Thanksgiving dinner and he'd better not bring home left overs. This woman also brings her garage sale junk, books she has to have back and could have kept as we have no interest in reading them. I will give her credit I was able to pawn off a telescope on her recently so not all is lost.

I went for a walk with my friend on Saturday and there was a garage sale. Copious amounts of Christmas decorations were on display. The man we talked to said his wife drags home mountains of crap from garage sales and it just sits around. I think "Hoarder" and my friend and his friend are champion hoarders.

I take my big turkeys to my local grocer, who will quarter them for me, while frozen. Then, the two of us only need deal with 1/4 at a time, and it is just right for a good turkey meal, a few sandwiches, leftovers, and a good soup!

js, Oh thank goodness. I got scared when you said spontaneous gift giver. I am such a grump and I get that crap stopped as soon as it is inflicted on me. One woman I stopped got so offended she said, "Well, I'll never bother you again!". And she hasn't, either. Now, that was interesting to me in that, if I wasn't willing to play the indebtedness game, she wasn't willing to be a friend at all. Basically, she couldn't control the relationship to her satisfaction, I guess, so she left in a huff. I have been chuckling about it ever since.

I'm going to make up individual turkey pot pies for my friend as he loves them and the ones from the freezer department leave a lot to be desired in my opinion, Arkansas Gloria. After all the other foods the friend provided I was truly lucky to get this turkey into the refrigerator. I do keep a lot of homemade soups on hand in the freezer. I'll do fine with this turkey but it is far bigger than I would ever have taken on.

Grump, I think my friend's friend is a controller too. I've known her for a long time and this is just her way. She assumes she knows what's best for everyone so it is a moot point trying to do anything about her habits.

Just about everything I say to her goes right over her head. When I try to change a subject that does too. This is why my friend goes to her gatherings and I beg off. Now and then I'll go but unless the kids are there from college I would rather stay home alone. I don't try to control anyone save myself and I'm not all that controlling with me even. If someone needs controlling they are on their own in my book.

I have figured out what to do with those 'too kindly' 'debt-dealers'... -if not family, they end up arriving 'unannounced' JUST when I was leaving... We had one who would not give up, and finally, after trying everything else, we just happened to be leaving every time they stopped by unannounced... Haven't seen them for about 6 mo. now...

My friend has changed his eating habits enormously since I arrived on the scene. He went from having a permanent scowl with big belly to a simi-scowl and a flat belly. He'd whine about about weighing the same as he did in high school but he could get off his behind and move a bit faster. I think living in a laid back place like the island can truly put some in a vegetative state. He's down to a quarter of the aches and pain complaints and his disposition is getting better all of the time. I would say he was running with the wrong crowd.

We nearly didn't keep our friendship over this particular woman. She'd started her shenanigans right away after I arrived. Her inconsistencies and the disregard for others truly got to me. We were invited to celebrate her son's birthday at a restaurant that is quite popular with the locals. She asked my friend to arrive early to save a table. I told my friend that she had better be prompt as holding up a table at a busy restaurant is not something I'm willing to do. We got there and the son, husband and a friend of the son's showed up soon after. The husband called the woman after we'd waited 20 minutes for her. She told him to chill. There was a lot of excuses made for her, nervous chatter and teasing about her habits but it wasn't comfortable at all. Finally 40 minutes of waiting her son called her. She told him to shut up and she'd be there when she got there. Ten minutes later she showed up, didn't greet anyone just went off on her agenda. She sat down and just as her son predicted threw a fit that the restaurant wasn't serving her favorite Portuguese Bean Soup. Then she got up and left because she had to do something or talk to someone. That's when I got up and excused myself telling my friend that enough is enough. I bid best wishes and good-bye to the rest and took a walk. After the meal, my friend came to meet me and he was steaming mad. I told him that if he likes that kind of action be my guest but I will not sit for another's completely obnoxious and rude behavior. We had a few fights over my refusal to join gatherings with this woman and family but each time she did the exact same thing. For her to chew out her son on the phone then when she arrived was just more than I was willing to take. Oh, she also treated her husband like a piece of offal. I believe her generosity is to cover for her mistreatment of others.

Not only no, AG, but HE** NO! (*grin*!) (apologies for the "yelling!")

I don't do the whole frigging weekend! I'll be nicely stocked up by Tuesday or Wednesday, then hunker down 'till the next week comes along. Really. All weekend. I won't put my butt nor my Bella's (my lovely little Jeep) butt on the road. Way, way, too many idiots out there, just because it's "the big weekend" mentality.

I like to think I support my local shopkeepers all year 'round too, and those "sales" will still be there come next week anyway. And on a more "personal note" I was nearly road splat one fine Saturday during said weekend, two teens were killed in the wreck, all because some dunce was in a hurry. I don't go out that weekend any more.

I absolutely can't handle crowds. Add to the fact that they have turned Christmas into such a commercial enterprise, I'd be sick of the holiday by the time I'd return back home. As it is, I cringe when I enter the grocery store and see the Christmas decorations and hear the music. PLEASE - can't we at least have Thanksgiving first???

Consequently, I don't do, never will do Black Friday. There just isn't anything out there that I want THAT badly!

Now.....Saturday the 26th is being promoted as "Shop Local" day. If I do anything, I'll make it a point to go to a small local store and patronize them in some way. I try to shop in smaller stores, anyway, but I'm glad they are bringing some attention to it.

There is an absolutely great craft store near us, and the owner is certifiably ...'different'. he always sees good, and sees artisans as creators, he is a wonderful man. His store is filled with crafts from over 125 artists, and is just a pleasure to go into!

We were on the other side of the state two years ago, and had a great day browsing/shopping there, too. Small stores are the way to go!

Hi Viva,

The fact that we have exported 80% of our jobs to countries that have lower wages than the US is not quite as you say.

tell that to the politicians from both sides who have sold us down the river.........years of letting jobs go abroad, years of lobbyists buying influence, years of politicians lining their own pockets and years of fraud in every sector............it is simplistic to simply single out the corporations or slap a label on rich people

I am sure that many of the things you write have been happening, but few of those claims caused the job flight. It was pure unadulterated greed...more profit. And, in some cases pure survival because the US simply could not compete with China one-on-one.

Remember Wal-Mart after the old man died. Once he was out of the picture that is when the madness began. Those gigantic sales for the Chinese catapulted them into all sorts of other markets, and you have the china-monster we have today.

I recall my dad telling us kids, in /about 1968, to buy American from then on, and in our life, or we would have no jobs. Didn't understand, then.

It's hard to see things when you are young.

Now we have the Chinese in our face, and we did it to ourselves. It's just a matter of time before our kids and grand-kids begin to see it!

I plan on taking a nap, eating leftovers, and staying warm. But if it's sunny, I might go out and play....

Hello no I won't be out there with those damn foolish beasts. Never have, never will. If consumers would only bother to educate their dumb asses, they would see that you are saving nothing. I look at the specials every week in my local paper. All throughout the year let's say, the infamous Keurig is advertised. $99.99. Never changes. Sales again this weekend screaming come and get it! $99.99. It is not a sale, the price doesn't change, you are being FOOLED! I will purchase one when they advertise it at say $60? This will be the day I call it a true special!

They certainly hope we are total idiots that's for sure. When I ventured out three years ago on Black Friday with neighbors I was in shock. Kailua Kona is very small so we all headed to Wal-Mart. The aisles were jammed with people and junk and everyone was scurrying about loading up. I only tagged along as I was an hour away from town and wanted to have lunch with these neighbors. The adventure left me solidly confirmed as a non-consumer freak.

I do NOT do the whole Black Friday thing. I swear there is not a sale on this planet that is worth me getting up hours before the butt-crack of dawn to drive to a crowded department store and watch people being rude and ignorant just to get a "deal". Personally, I think Christmas is way over commercialized - there are ALREADY Christmas ads on TV, and it's not even Thanksgiving - and that it is all about big business padding their bottom line. I usually try to shop locally to support those Mom and Pop stores that are slowly fading from the economic stratosphere due to the huge influx of the "big box" stores.

Yes and yes, help the mom and pop stores if you need something, but I'm with you Queenie, needs only for me, and wants can be done at my own convenience....

Boy, Queenie, I agree with that:

I swear there is not a sale on this planet that is worth me getting up hours before the butt-crack of dawn to drive to a crowded department store and watch people being rude and ignorant just to get a "deal".

I am , now, officially, one of those ...who wakes up about 6:00 P.M.... that's how long it takes to get through my day, and then, I can....relax.

Give teens cash so they can get what they really want.

For adults, bake bread, rolls, brownies. pies, cakes, tarts, and cheesecakes. Make fudge.

I tell the adults not to get me anything because if I want something I just go get it anyway. There, done.

Am I being a crab?

IMHO, No. You are being resourcesful, thoughtful, and frugal. With the way things are in our country of late, those are qualities that EVERYONE should posses - if they did, maybe we wouldn't be in the position that we are.

I'm with you Queenie and Grump, if I want something I'll purchase it for myself. Thank goodness my children aren't big consumers either. My son began refusing gifts years ago. He's a bit odd sometimes but he makes it really easy on it during holidays and his birthday. He got mad at me for sending him a gift for his birthday, so that's it for me. I just try to respect his wishes even when I don't always understand them. I sent him money as he'd mentioned how much he wanted a certain pair of boots. Whoops, my bad.

I think if we'd all just stop going on blind shopping binges, only purchased from American made and small businesses our country would catch a clue. This is my holiday wish. Snub the made elsewhere stuff for a season and I'll bet a big surprise would be in store.

I like that, js....

Snub the made elsewhere stuff for a season and I'll bet a big surprise would be in store.

We didn't exactly care what the kids thought when we said we were not buying for Holidays any more... it was the right thing to do.

We saw our kids being stressed, trying to buy something for everyone, and for us, and thought ...this is insane!

If we stop, they won't feel...obligated to do it, either, and Christmas will go back to ..Christmas

You know, Grump.... obligated????

My oldest daughter has a husband, three children, two dogs and a cat. She home schools and is very active in her children's lives with swimming, music lessons, dance and all. Her two oldest are very proficient in forensic investigations and have received awards for their efforts. She calls stressed out as she now has one a senior in college and one headed to college and a 9 year old. I wouldn't expect her to send gifts to me as it simply isn't necessary. She's sent a couple of books and a box of goodies from Trader Joe's (we don't have a TJs on the island)in the three and a half years I've been here. That suits me fine. Stress and gift giving just doesn't make sense to me.

First- I HATE to shop.

Second- I HATE crowds.

Third- I HATE the animal mentality that seems to come out of these "people".

Fourth- I NEVER go shopping on Black Friday.

Fifth- Always do most of my shopping her ein town or on the computer.

Great ideas, Gloria!!

Me, too, RACHEL: I hate to shop! And I hate to have that feeling of ...I have to buy them something, so what will it be..? What a horrible, fake feeling, so we did away with it.

We would rather let THEM feel obligated..., or like Charlie agreed with: use the computer...
