Good Mornin' AG!
I've never made this stuff, but my Mum did every once in a while, as did her Mum. Little Grandma, that's what we called her, even had one of those tomato cone she had brought over from the "Old Country"! You have no idea how much I'd like to have that puppy today! Unfortunately, it got lost amid myriad moves...waaaaa! I still remember watching them use it when I was a wee lad. We put up a LOT of tomatoes in those days! (*grin*!)
I also remember I liked this stuff too! Spread all over slices of nice, warm, fresh Italian bread, Oh My! Superb on scrambled eggs too, with a little bacon mixed in! I also remember it never had a long shelf life in our house either. Good stuff!
Have you ever made it before, or will this be your first foray into your kitchen wall-to-wall with preparing tomatoes for it? LOL!

Do make it a point to let us know how it turns out!

Well, well, well.... Somehow, I moved my reply to Enoch up here to Auger..? So, I wiped it and started over. I have never made the tomato jam, but am seriously looking forward to it! Mom would occasionally put a little bit of sugar on her sliced tomatoes, and I think this jam would be a treat! Will find out. Charged batteries to my camera, and will look to see if it connects to this (other) computer.. Maybe I can add photos. Food-love! Love-food! (grins). But what is really fun is to see what one can make that is so delectable....

I have one of those tomato cones, a friend here gave me one 4 years ago. I also just bought a nut/wheat hand grinder from her. She has been my 'teacher' here, she is so down to earth, and has done all her own rugs until recently... she's an angel!

One of my childhood memories treasured is home made picked tomatoes, pickled cucumbers, and sauerkraut with dill and caraway seeds. That, a slice of fresh baked rye bread, and a bowl of either Shav (Russian style wild grass soup) or Borscht (Central to Eastern European style beet soup). Borscht was served hot in winter with a boiled potato, or cold in summer with sour cream. The Shav was always served cold, with fresh diced just picked seasonal vegetables and a dollop of sour cream. In winter, Hungarian Style string bean soup was sour cream and water until it reduced to a thick base. Then fresh onion, raw snappy string beans with lots of crunch, and Hungarian pungent red Papricka.
The pickled tomatoes added immensely to this meal of delectables.

Oh, Enoch! This sounds so good! The Shav sounds good tight now, as does the Hungarian string bean soup....actually, all of it, but I did not get beets this year. I worked for a tiny Italian bakery, when a sophomore, and can still remember their breads! I wonder what was picked to make the Shav and if it is available here. May need to check that out. Yum..

Love my friends!! I bought a bag of bananas yesterday for $1.00, must be 10# there, made banana bread last night and a banana shake, but could only make one loaf. Picked up additional supplies today, and freezer loaves coming up! My grand-daughter is over for the weekend, having fun. We cracked a few hickory nuts and pecans to add, and she helped make it. She is 10, so sure these memories will reside forever.

made banana bread last night
I'm not kidding, I made a loaf of walnut-banana bread last night!
And you'll note, it's walnut first, 'cause I like a lot of walnuts in it! LOL!

ps - those memories are warmer than any loaf of bread could ever be!

I love tomatoes in just about every form and fashion.
But I pause at Tomato Jam. To me that means it will go on bread, which is ok by me. The flavor and consistency will be the deciding factors.
Tomatoes are so desirable, I will try them regardless of how they are prepared. Well, maybe not tomato pie. lol

Delish on scrambled eggs, Al! Or in omelets. With a bit o' bacon and green pepper too, delish!

O.K., Results are in...and I changed the recipe! Again! I reached for the lemon jello, and found it was gone... Duh, so started thinking...do I go to the store or what can I do instead?? I had gelatin, and lemon juice, and a fresh lemon, so here is what I did..
I looked up a recipe for lemon jelly- kinda. Simple. I made tomato 'jelly-jam', and and lemon juice and finely grated lemon rind. Then, since I had more juice than the recipe calls for, I measured the juice, sterilized enough 1/2 pint jars...( filled 7 1/2), added a touch of fresh cilantro since I had no coriander, then, taste-taste, then I added juice of some fresh mint leaves. Really picked it up and added a lot to it. I ended up using about 2 3/4c. sugar and juice of 1 Stevia leaf. Then, cooked it, then added about 1 1/2 1 3/4 pkg pectin and poured and sealed. It is delicious. have 1/2 jar that went to the frige... Yummy!
